ANGELES CITY— The Commission on Population Region III conferred the 2014 Regional Rafael M. Salas Population and Development Award (RMSPDA) for the City category during the awarding ceremony-cum-Angeles City Teen Information Center re-launch held here on September 29, 2015.
POPCOM Region III Director Eleanor Cura mentioned in the said event that the local government of Angeles bested 13 other cities in the region on population and development-related achievements in Population and Development (POPDEV), Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning (RP-FP), as well as Adolescent Health and Youth Development (AHYD).
Dir. Cura also mentioned that the existence of a teen center sealed the deal for Angeles City to be announced as the Regional RMSPDA winner for the city category in her presentation of the Philippine Population Management Program.
During the said event, Angeles City received a plaque of recognition and P50,000 worth of equipment and various items from as winner to the regional RMSPDA winner.
Attended by almost 100 individuals including National Youth Commissioner Percival Cendaña, City Mayor Edgardo D. Pamintuan, Councilor Edu Pamintuan, Barangay Captains, Heads of City Departments, Offices, and Divisions, as well as regional and local population staff, barangay population workers, and youth peer volunteers, the event also included signing of the stakeholders’ pledge of support for the teen center, and a Memorandum of Agreement between the city and POPCOM Region III.
In his inspirational message, Commissioner Cendaña challenged the guests to address adolescent-related issues such as high incidences of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections including HIV-AIDS.
City Mayor Pamintuan meanwhile expressed his gratitude for the award and stated other people-centered achievements of the city.
Angeles City, along with the Municipality of Bustos, Bulacan are regional RMSPDA entries to the National RMSPDA to be held November of this year.
Institutionalized by POPCOM in celebration of Rafael M. Salas, the first Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund among other significant contributions to the country, the RMSPDA is given to localities which continuously pursue the vision and ideals of Rafael M. Salas in achieving a better world for present and future generations through high quality programs for population and development (POPDEV).
