In commemoration of the 2016 World Population Day (WPD) themed “Investing in Teenage Girls”, The Commission on Population Region III plans to observe the annual WPD by holding different activities and campaigns that focus on adolescents.

According to POPCOM Region III Director Eleanor M. Cura, the WPD’s theme is in line with the current issues and concerns affecting the youth, specifically teenage girls. Furthermore, it shall support POPCOM Region III’s efforts in addressing early sexual encounters and high incidence of teenage pregnancies in Central Luzon.

Dir. Cura also mentioned that as per Department of Health Region III data, teenage pregnancy cases increased in 6 out of 7 provinces of the Region from 2013 to 2014. The same report also shows that teenage pregnancy cases in Central Luzon occur as early as 10 year old girls.

Dir. Cura also enjoins everyone to conduct activities and events in observance of the WPD.

Remembered July 11th of every year, this year’s WPD will be celebrated by a main event to be held in Metro Manila. Events shall be conducted all over the country prior to the culminating activity.

In observance of the WPD, POPCOM Region III has initiated a social media campaign entitled Selfie Kabataan, Sali na Kabayan.

SELFIE KABATAAN, SALI NA KABAYAN

Banking on the power of the social media, POPCOM Region III has spearheaded “Selfie Kabataan, Sali na Kabayan.” The said project aims to increase awareness of social media users, particularly the youth, on the World Population Day and current population issues.

The project allows teenage participants to post a “selfie” (or groupie) on POPCOM Region III’s Facebook fan page (facebook.com/POPCOM3.) and answer question on how can they help invest in terms of education, health and employment. At the same time, their post should have hashtag with #worldpopulationday #investinginteenagegirls #popcomregion3. The target of the campaign aims to see the public’s view on the participation of the youth in the development of the country and make the hashtags trends on social media accounts by July 11.

ABOUT THE WPD

Established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, the WPD was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, the estimated date on which the world's population reached a total of five billion people. Today, WPD, observed in most parts of the world, is spearheaded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the lead UN agency whose goal is to deliver “a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled.”

At present, the total global population has reached 7.30 billion. Meanwhile, the population of the Philippines as of August 1, 2015 was 100,981,437 based on the 2015 Census of Population released by the Philippine Statistics Authority.
